Notice the Grade
In particularly mountainous areas you’ll notice that there are percentages posted on signage that indicate the grade. This is important information because it will help you determine how to climb or descend with your semi, especially if you’re hauling a full load. The grade percentage in combination with the weight of your trailer will determine the ideal speed and power you should maintain.
Mind Your Traction
The condition of your tires will be especially crucial when you’re driving through the mountains. You’ll want to have a good amount of tread on your tires in order to achieve the best traction possible. Make sure to complete tire inspections before and after each trip to monitor the state of your tires and to identify any unusual wear.
Mountain areas typically have lower temperatures, so you may encounter areas of snow or wind when you wouldn’t expect it. If you often travel routes that take you through mountain areas, it might be a requirement to carry tire chains.
