Buying A Bus For Your Church

White Bus

Busses can be a great asset for any community, and that’s no different for a church. Whether you’re transporting congregants to and from a service, heading to community events or camps, or any other group activity, a bus can make the entire process easier. We here at White’s International Trucks know that it can be hard finding the right bus, though, so we’ve put together a guide to buying a bus for your church below. To learn more, or to see the busses we have for sale, contact our stores across the great state of North Carolina, today!

Passenger Capacity

Your first consideration needs to be the expected passenger count. You might only need to transport small groups like a youth group, or you may want to carry the majority of your congregation. Consider how many people you’ll typically need to move, then find a model that can accommodate that without paying for unneeded space. A bus can fit anywhere from 9 to 35 people, so you’re bound to find one that fits your needs.

Storage Capacity

Part of the capacity equation also needs to be your passengers’ storage needs. If your group has luggage, bags, or other supplies, make sure your bus has the storage space to handle it. You’ll want dedicated storage space if the cargo is delicate, as well.

Accessibility

Next, think about your congregation’s accessibility needs. If anyone has mobility issues or even needs a wheelchair, you’ll want to account for that. Wheelchair lifts are difficult to add onto the bus aftermarket, so you’ll need a model that includes it from the get-go. Ramp entrances and walker storage should also be considered.

Trip Length

Try to average out the typical length of a trip you’ll make in your bus. The longer the trips will be, the more you’ll need to think about:

  • the fuel economy of any models you’re considering
  • AC, heat, and quality seats to keep passengers comfortable
  • entertainment systems to keep them happy
  • overhead bins with reading lights

Safety Features

Depending on who you’ll be transporting and how long the trips will take, seat belts may be a priority. Not all busses come with these, and if children will be in the group, you may also need booster seat compatibility. Most states require that kids under a certain weight be transported in booster seats.

Licensing

Finally, consider whether you’ll need a special license to operate the bus. If the vehicle seats more than 15 people and weighs over 26,000 pounds, any driver will need a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
