Before driving a medium-duty truck, it is important to do a pre-drive inspection. This helps ensure the vehicle is running properly and that operating it won’t put your life or the lives of other commuters in danger. The inspection should include checking the engine oil, coolant levels, brakes, lights, and tires, but you may start to build out your own list as you become a more experienced driver. Still, it’s good to start with the basics.
Engine Fluids
Check your engine fluids to ensure there’s an adequate amount of each and that it’s still fresh. This should include oil and coolant. And remember that these fluids should be replaced regularly. Check your owner’s manual for full details.
Lights
All lights on a medium-duty truck must be working properly before the truck can be driven. This includes the headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. All of these lights are important for other drivers to see the truck, and to know what the truck is doing.
Tires
Truck tires are one of the most important parts of the truck. They need to be in good condition and have enough tread to grip the road. If they are bald or have low tread, they can slip on wet roads and cause an accident. Inspect your tires before each drive to make sure they are properly inflated and have enough tread.
